Students and colleagues attended a Charles Wotten event in June 2023.
Charles Wotten, also known as Wootton, died in Liverpool in 1919 and was buried in a pauper’s grave. A sailor who died after he was pursued by a white mob in one of the UK’s worst outbreaks of racist violence is to have a permanent headstone on his grave.

‘’It was a real privilege for myself, colleagues and students to be part of such a special and poignant event. I was blown away by how well engaged our students were and this is reflected in the amazing work they created during the Charles Wotten drop down day prior to the actual event itself’’
Feedback from the students who attended the event.
‘’Charles was a very good man who did not deserve to be killed the way he was’’
‘’I thought it was very sad’’
‘’ It is a great thing that as a school we can remember people like Charles Wooten through the work we do’’
‘’He finally has the resting place he deserves’’
‘’Coming to this event made me realise the importance of knowing local history in order to be able to pass on knowledge to those we teach and in doing so, play our part in ensuring evil acts of racial hatred and intolerance play no part in the lives of generations to come’’
(David Friend Assistant Headteacher Lawrence House School)
‘’A humbling experience. I was extremely proud of how respectful our young people were and how they were moved by the warmth of the occasion’’
(Lucy Golding teacher Lawrence House School)
