Derby Cottage

Derby Cottage is a  small 3-bedroom mixed gender home. Its size lends it to a “family group home”* model of care. The young people tend to stay long term, enabling permanency and attachment. The home offers a very nurturing environment and its emphasis is on relationships and growth. The young people and staff here work together to overcome young people’s challenges and complexity. They do this through stability and permanency by acting as “a good parent should” (Children Act, 1989).

The home has an excellent team, who have worked closely together for many years. They have an outstanding skill base and their commitment to PACE is at the core of the home and its practice. Therefore very rarely do placements break down. The home has the full support of QPC’s clinical team, led by Dr Pagnotta, offering a range of therapeutic interventions with an emphasis on attachment. Derby Cottage also has the option of education through Lawrence House School (DfE registered Independent School – see separate webpage), which works well with young people who need to rebuild their social world (Vision for Change, DoH, 2016).

*FAMILY GROUP HOME is the name given to a model of ‘care’ where small groups of children are accommodated in buildings that approximate the size and form of a ‘normal’ family home.
